Dainthlen Falls is one of the most popular spots in Meghalaya, located around 5km from the city. The natural rock carvings near the soft gushing waterfalls narrate the story of a python which was killed at the top of the waterfalls. The Mawkdok Valley located at the beginning of the Sohra circuit is a mandatory stopover for tourists traveling to Cherrapunji. The Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya has one of the longest natural cave systems in India. The 150m long cave is an excellent way to spend half a day with a little bit of adventure.
Seven Sisters Waterfalls is a sight to behold. Known as the Nohsngithiang Falls or Mawsmai Falls, this is a seven-step cascade and one of the marvels of Meghalaya. The water falls down over the limestone cliffs of Khasi Hills, from above 1000 feet, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in India. Climb down a few steps and behold the sight of one the most gorgeous waterfalls in Shillong. This scenic three-tier cascading beauty is also called ‘Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew’ by the local people, which means ‘three-step waterfalls’. If you are around Shillong, a trip to Elephants Falls is a must.
Shillong Peak, as the name suggests, is the highest peak in Shillong that offers breath-taking views of the city, the lush hills, and the Bangladesh Plains. Kamakhya Temple is a popular pilgrimage site in India representing the female power of Shakti and celebrating a woman’s ability to conceive. According to Hindu myth, when the troubled Shiva scattered the pieces of this deceased wife Sati’s body across the realm, one of the pieces, Sati’s womb, fell on Nilachal Hill which is around 8km from Guwahati. The Kamakhya Temple was built to honor the deity Kamakhya. It is one the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas in India and one of the most visited tourist places in India.
